In the 19th century, it was already known as Maniani and was part of the La Paz department; however, in 1869, it joined the Comayagua department. The true spelling of its name, Lamaní, comes from Mexican and means «Place of Potters.» Until 2009, it had approximately 7 villages and 64 hamlets.
The first inhabitants of Lamaní were indigenous people, followed by individuals like Basilio Flores, Venancio Macías, Manuel Rojas, and Salvador Rivera, who, although not native to the area, contributed significantly to its establishment.
